We can both learn and be inspired by Latvia’s complex history. The experience of Latvia is internationally relevant, especially now, when the world is increasingly uncertain in terms of economics, governance, and international relations. I am sure that reading the contents of this book will make you realize how much of the realities that worry us today were also relevant a hundred or more years ago. The authors of the book are not afraid to look into the future, which will come to us all as a surprise sooner than we think.

The manuscript is, in my opinion, an outstanding contribution to Latvian and Baltic history, as well as historiography. It successfully offers a synthetic historical volume by incorporating contemporary interdisciplinary methodologies and collaborative research practices. Rather than presenting different disciplines of history as isolated fields, the volume integrates economic processes with politics, demographic change, migration, technological development, environmental resources, regional disparities, and questions of national identity.
