Imants Ziedonis, “The 1001st Blackish-Blue Night”
In collaboration with the Imants Ziedonis Foundation “Viegli”, “Jumava” has published the book “The 1001st Blackish-Blue Night” in English, compiling 33 poems that are included in all three “Viegli” music albums in Latvian. The poems were translated by Ivars Šteinbergs collaborating with several authors in Latvia and abroad. The book also includes stories by Foundation “Viegli” chairwoman Žanete Grende, musicians Goran Gora, Renārs Kaupers, Māra Upmane-Holšteine, Raimonds Gusarevs and Jānis Strapcāns about how they met Imants Ziedonis. Līga Kitchen, a Latvian artist residing in London, was responsible for the design of the book creating a unique visual image for each poem.
Ivars Šteinbergs, who worked at creating the book in English, says: “This is a book of transformations – as musicians and translators render one another’s interpretations, printed and sung poems become renderings, renderings become songs once again. It is precisely that element which is the most interesting in “The 1001st Blackish-Blue Night” – the aim of this collection is not to introduce Ziedonis himself to an English speaking audience, but rather – to discover the poetic potential of Ziedonis’ poetry to create new texts, to discover some of the many transformation possibilities of poetrylanguage.”
